Twelve

Each of us sits in our small circle, bundled up in either a throw blanket or our coats. It has been at least an hour since we spoke, and the candles have burned down to nearly half their original size. I jump when I realize my eyes are closed. I’m unsure how long they have been closed.

“You okay?” Mason asks, noticing my convulsion.

“Yeah, sorry, I’m just getting tired,” I admit.

“If you ladies want to take a nap Ezra and I can take the first watch,” Mason offers.

Maya bursts out laughing. “Yeah right, like I would take a nap around any of you.”

Ivy agrees, “Yeah, no way will I be able to sleep.”

“Fine, suit yourself,” Mason shrugs.

I see that Maya’s gaze is fixed on me. I look away and then back at her, hoping she would catch the hint that she was making me uncomfortable.

“Can I help you?” I finally ask.

“Just thinking,” she says with a smirk on her face.

“Care to share your thoughts with the rest of us?” I inquire, not shielding my irritation.

Maya shakes her head. “Oh nothing really, I was just thinking back to the funerals.”

“Excuse me?” I bark. “What funerals?”

“Well, I suppose not both funerals. Professor Ford was more of a memorial, right?” she asks.

“We all know it was a memorial because we were all there. All the students from his classes were,” I snap.

“Maya, we all went,” Mason interjects. “You know that. We didn’t want anyone becoming suspicious.”

“Oh, I know that, but we didn’t all go to Mrs. Ford’s funeral,” Maya replies.

“Why don’t you stop beating around the bush and just say whatever it is that’s running around that crazy brain of yours,” I say.

She shrugs innocently. “I’m just saying that you were the only one of us who went to the funeral after the professor’s wife killed herself.”

“That’s not true,” I remind her. “Marla and Hannah went with me too.”

“Well, that’s an interesting fact that I hadn’t thought about before,” Maya chimes, rubbing her hands together as if she were about to dig into a juicy steak dinner. “You’re the only person left alive who went to Mrs. Ford’s funeral.”

A chill runs down my spine. I try to hide it, but I’m sure my face betrays me. I try to turn away from Maya’s stare, which seems to burn through me. I look at everyone else, and all I can think is that they are all staring at me with the same expression as Maya. Fear wells inside me. I’m here to figure out who is behind the gathering of killers, and somehow, I became the prime suspect.

“Maya.” I try to say something, but no words leave my mouth after I speak her name.

“This is ridiculous,” Mason huffs. “Are we really going to start pointing the finger at each other?”

He’s wrong, though. That’s exactly what we have to do if we are going to figure out who the guilty party is. “No,” I interject. “She has a point. Of all of us, I’m the only one left who was at Mrs.
